Tranexamic Acid is an amazing additive that we use daily in clinic at DSC for the preventation of hyperpigmentation and prevention of new pigment formation. Used in a topical, it can help prevent formation of new pigmentation, which is a key part of the process of treating pigmentation. Pigmentation reduction is usually done by heavy lifters like kojic acid, alpha arbutin, licorice root extract, and of course, hydroquinone. Topicals that contain these key ingredients are generally more irritating on the skin because they lift and reduce existing pigmentation, and are generally recommended for night-time usage. Because the development of pigmentation is complicated, targeting one pathway for recalcitrant pigment (such as in the case of melasma) may not be enough, which is why a pigment prevention topical is a great addition to a daily skincare routine, especially in the AM.
