Ultherapy is based on the same ultrasound technology used in medical imaging devices. The Ultherapy device takes images of the inner layers of skin and delivers heat to the areas needing treatment. This heat causes the skin to respond and create new collagen, which is responsible for tightening the skin.

Ultherapy can be used anywhere on the face and upper neck. It can be used on the entire area, or it can be used in localized sections.

A good candidate for Ultherapy is someone with skin that has “relaxed” to the point of looking, and often feeling, less firm. A lowered eyebrow line or sagging skin on the eyelids, for instance, is often the first sign of “maturing” skin. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for a surgical facelift, there are many people who want some lifting but are not ready for surgery, either mentally, financially, or logistically. Following the Ultherapy procedure, the vast majority of patients will experience a noticeable lifting. Many patients also experience firmer, tighter skin that has a smoother texture and more even skin tone. While some results are apparent immediately following the procedure, the full effect develops over the course of two to three months and typically lasts for 10 to 12 months. To maintain the full results, many patients require annual touch-up procedures.

Compared to many other cosmetic procedures, Ultherapy poses very few risks. The procedure utilizes the same ultrasound technology that has been used in the medical community for over 50 years. The most common side effects include mild redness and tenderness in the area where the treatment was performed. Both of these are completely normal and tend to go away quickly. Some patients may also experience bruising and swelling, but these side effects are much less common. They also tend to be mild and clear up on their own.

Ultherapy is performed by a medical professional using a small handheld device. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and there is no need for anesthesia. During the procedure, the doctor will hold the device against your skin. The device captures and projects ultrasound images of the inner layers of the skin. Looking at these images, the doctor will determine precisely where you need treatment. Using the same device, the doctor will deliver low levels of heat to those areas. The entire procedure typically takes about 30 minutes, during which time many patients feel mild warming sensations or prickling beneath the skin. In general, patients are able to obtain their desired results with just one treatment.

The recovery for Ultherapy is typically very simple. Patients are able to return to their regular day to day activities immediately following the procedure, and there are no special measures that must be taken. Immediately after the procedure, some patients have reported redness, but this typically goes away on its own within a few hours.
