Don’t forget SPF
As the weather heats up and the days stay brighter longer, don’t forget to use your SPF daily! Use a quarter teaspoon for the face and neck each time you reapply sunscreen, and make sure to use a broad-spectrum SPF for the best skin protection. Supplement sun protection with UV-protective clothing, rash guards, hats, and even sunglasses. This is especially important if you use any sun-sensitizing topicals like retinoids, AHAs, or pigment-inhibiting products.
Keep skincare cool in the fridge
Many skincare items stay better longer when kept away from moisture, away from light, and out of excessively warm temperatures. Products like antioxidant serums and sheet masks feel great when kept in the fridge on hot summer days. Face rollers, gua sha stones, and other tools are also great for depuffing when kept cold.
Switch to lighter formulations
Summer often comes with hot, muggy weather. Beat the feeling of oppressive skincare by switching to lighter, gel formulations for moisturizers or dry touch body oils.
Wash hands after handling citrus in the outdoors
Summer is the best season for outdoor margaritas or citrus garnishes. Sun exposure with citrus, especially lime, on the skin can lead to phytophotodermatitis. This is when hyperpigmentation, redness, itchiness, or even blistering occurs on the skin from UV rays reacting with photosensitizing compounds called furanocoumarins. The best way to prevent this is by wearing sunscreen and immediately washing hands with soap and cold water after handling citrus.
