Knowledge about Botox treatments for the upper face is almost ubiquitous because of their popularity. Beyond the upper face, innumerable Botox treatment areas and treatment purposes exist. A brand new FDA indication has been recently obtained for treatment of the neck with Botox.

While the official FDA indication is brand new, this type of treatment is not new to seasoned injectors. Previously, treating the neck with Botox has often been called a “Nefertiti Lift,” simply because she is often depicted in profile with a long, elegant neck.

What does Botox for the neck treat?

When you treat the neck with Botox, you are targeting the platysma muscles on both sides of the neck, as shown in the before and after image above. Treating these muscles, which are responsible for pulling the jaw down, tensing the neck, and play a part in certain facial expressions, helps contour and improve the appearance of the neck and even jawline. Treating these muscles can help “slim” the appearance of the neck.

Because they insert into the mandible and some overlying tissue of the face, overly strong platysmal bands can also contribute to a “double chin”  or “turkey neck” appearance. This is simply because they pull down on the tissue that is above the muscle. Treating the platysmal bands up to the jawline can relax this overly contracted effect, allowing the superficial tissue to return to its natural placement. This leads to the appearance of a more contoured jawline. This effect is only really apparent on those with very strong bands that pull tissue down; there is unfortunately no effect on subcutaneous adipose tissue quantity.

How many units do I need?

The official FDA indication was obtained with 36 units of Botox in four platysmal bands (the most pronounced cords that appear when flexing the neck). Some people may present with more than four bands or with very strong muscles, in which case more units may be needed.
